How can you tell when you need to replace your Jacuzzi motor and when you only need to fix it? These are some common issues that may arise with your washer pump motor.

If your motor is making odd noises, it can mean that your washer pump is either leaking or the water supply is restricted. If you hear either a grinding or a screeching noise, it could be an indication of a failed motor.

There might also be a problem with the motor bearings, which would require replacing the bearings or the motor. To check if the bearings on your motor are no longer good, remove the motor from the pump and then turn it on. If the motor still makes noise, despite not having anything connected to it, then the bearings are indeed the issue.

There is also the possibility that your motor has simply overheated. Long stretches of continuous use can cause this. It is also possible that dirt or debris has gotten into your motor and is blocking the passage of air that would allow it to cool.

If the motor is having trouble starting, or is humming but not powering up, your start capacitor might have burned out (LINK TO CAPACITOR SIGHT). The start capacitor is what lets a motor start up instantly instead of taking a long time to come up to speed before it can be used. If the start capacitor burns out, or wears down, it will have an adverse effect on the motor’s ability to power up. You can test capacitor condition here. »

How do I select a Jacuzzi Motor?

1. Nameplate


If you do need to select a new Jacuzzi motor, it is important that you locate the nameplate on your motor. Frame size (FR), RPM, voltage, enclosure (ENCL), frequency (Hz), horsepower (HP). service factor (SF), rotation (ROT) and phase (PH) will all be listed there and they must all be matched to make sure that you are purchasing the right motor for your pump.

2. Frame Size


Jacuzzi pump motor frame sizes will end with a with either J, C or Y.

  • J is used for jet pump motor that have a stainless steel threaded shaft.
  • C indicates that the motor has a c-frame mounting face.
  • Y represents a special, non-standard mounting configuration. The "Y" suffix has become standard among manufacturers, even though the mount itself is not standard.

It is imperative that, when selecting a new Jacuzzi pump motor, you match the frame size of your original motor. This is perhaps the most important factor you must consider when making sure that you buy a motor that will work in your pump. The frame size can be found on the nameplate of your old motor.

Jacuzzi motor pumps will have a frame size of either 48 or 56 frame.

If you can’t find the frame size on your motor nameplate, you can easily determine your frame size by measuring the distance between the bolt holes on the face, called the bolt circle diameter. The bolts holes will be less than 4 inches apart for a 48 frame, while they will be more than 4 inches apart on a 56 frame.

Due to their smaller size and lower cost, most Jacuzzi pumps will be 48 frame. The 56 frames are slightly pricier, but there are numerous benefits to them, including a longer service life and less chance of burnout than 48 frame units.


3. Mounting Type


Motors can be mounted by the foot, the face or both, depending on the design of the motor.

A Jacuzzi motor will be mounted by the face, meaning that the motor will have threaded holes on the shaft side that will be used to secure the motor to the pump.

Above-ground Jacuzzi motor pumps will be attached by thru-bolts, which have pre-attached bolts that extend out of the shaft end of the motor in order to be secured to the pump.

In-ground Jacuzzi motor pumps will be attached by a C-flange or a square flange mount. A flange is a shield with holes for mounting that goes over the face of the motor. A C-flange is round, while a square flange is, as the name suggests, square.

4. Single or Three Phase


There are two types of motors to choose from: single phase or three phase.


  • Single phase will most often be found in ordinary household wiring. If you own a Jacuzzi for personal use, this is probably what you have.
  • Three phase motors are more often used in industrial shops or places that run high powered equipment that would not be found in an ordinary house. Owners of a sports club, or a similar type of business, will need a three phase motor.

The original and replacement motors must be the same phase.


5. Enclosure


Jacuzzi motors are often open drip proof (ODP). ODP motors have cooling vents on the body. The vents point downward in order to protect the motor from dripping water getting inside, but the vents can also cause it to be vulnerable to dust, debris, and other things entering through the openings. ODP motors sometimes come with a rodent screen to prevent damage from outside contaminants.

6. Rotation


Your motor can rotate one of three different ways:


  • Clockwise
  • Counterclockwise
  • Reversible - runs in both directions

A single phase Jacuzzi motor will run in only one direction, while a three phase Jacuzzi motor will be reversible. It is important to purchase a motor that rotates in the correct direction, since one going in the wrong direction may do damage to your pump.

You can determine the direction of your motor’s rotation by turn the motor on and looking at it from the shaft end. Some motors may have a different method of determining shaft rotation but will usually indicate if this is the case to avoid confusion.


7. RPM, Voltage, and Frequency


Jacuzzi motors will either be in the range of 115 volts or 230 range.

Most replacement motors come with dual voltage (115/230V, for example). Since the voltage of your new motor needs to be the same as the original, you need to make sure that it is connected to the correct voltage. The motor's nameplate will provide you with information on how to set up your motor with the lower voltage if that is what you require.

Jacuzzi motors will have a frequency of 50 or 60 Hz. It will have an 1800 or 3600 RPM on 60Hz or will run at 1500 or 3000 RPM when the motor has 50 Hz.


8. Horsepower


Your Jacuzzi motor should have 1 HP for every 4 to 6 standard size jets.

When buying a new motor you must determine the service factor horsepower of the motor. The service factor is the overload capacity built into a motor, so in this case it will indicate the maximum horsepower your motor will be able to handle, above the rated horsepower, without overheating. Determining this number is easy: simply multiply the total horsepower by the service factor, both of which can be found on the nameplate of the motor. Do this for both the original and replacement motor; the service factor horsepower of the new motor must be equal to or greater than that of the original motor.

It is highly recommended that you choose a motor with the same horsepower as the one you are replacing.
